When you first hear about adventure travel vacations, you might think of high adventure travel like bungee jumping off a bridge in a remote part of South America-and you’d be right. You’d also be right if you thought of going on an African safari or spending a week driving cattle at a dude ranch. Adventure travel vacations are a way to see the world that takes you out of your vacation comfort zone, tests your limits and broadens your horizons, no matter what you define those to be.

Bungee Cord Jumping Optional
A common misconception is that adventure travel is best left to adrenaline junkies and people who are extremely physically fit. Not so: If you travel to Tuscany for a week of cooking school, you’re an adventure traveler.

At its core, adventure travel is really about active exploration of unique landscapes, exotic wildlife and foreign cultures. You might choose to hike to the top of Mount McKinley, raft over class 5 rapids, spend a week on the site of an archaeological dig or swim with manatees.

You Don’t Have to be Rich
Choosing adventure travel doesn’t mean you have to raid your retirement account. This form of travel has grown so popular and options so varied that chances are pretty good you’ll find something you want to do within your price range.

Your adventure travel destination will be the biggest factor in how much your adventure travel package costs, followed by any gear you need. Biking through the New England countryside, for example, will cost considerably less than hiking the trails in Nepal. Not only is Nepal more difficult to get to, but you’ll need a lot more gear to hike around the Himalayas.

You Don’t Have to be 18
A lot of people think adventure travel is only for the young or other people with few obligations. While adventure travel does attract a large number of young customers, you’ll also find a wide variety of adventure travel packages designed for couples, families and children, and seniors.

You Don’t Have to Rough it
You can sleep outside next to an active volcano if you want to, but don’t you have to give up creature comforts when you go on an adventure travel vacation. Adventure travel accommodations run the gamut from tents and cabins to private inns and luxury hotels-it all depends on where you’re going and what you want to do when you get there.

Choosing the Right Trip
Not all adventure travel is strenuous, but the more active a trip you choose, the more fit you’ll need to be. If you’ve spent all winter sitting on the couch instead of at the gym, it’s probably not smart to go straight from your living room to the Slickrock Bike Trail in Moab, Utah.

Adventure travel companies usually rank trips on a scale of difficulty. But what do those ratings really mean? Unfortunately, there’s no industry standard so the difficulty ratings are subjective and vary widely from agency to agency.

Ask the adventure travel company to explain its ratings. Find out what factors-like distance and duration-are included in those ratings. Talk with an adventure travel representative about your fitness levels and which trips you’re best suited for (some companies offer adventure travel for women only, for example). And always ask for client references from people who’ve taken the same trip you’re interested in.

If there’s an adventure travel trip you’ve set your heart on, but you’re concerned you or the person you’re traveling with might not be able to keep up, ask the adventure travel agency if the package offers flexibility options. If you’re interested in a biking trip, this might mean the adventure travel package includes a support van that can pick you and your bike up if you need to call it a day.

Booking a Trip
You’ll want to talk with several adventure travel agencies before you choose one to book your trip. Start by limiting your options to adventure travel agencies that have been in business for at least five years and employ their own trip guides rather than hiring contractors.

The adventure travel agency should also provide you with detailed itineraries for the trip or trips you’re interested in and be able to tell you exactly what is and isn’t included in the trip price, including any gear you’ll need.Speaking of price, the time of year you choose for your adventure travel is also important and you should expect the price to vary for the same trip across the seasons. Generally, the lower-priced trips will be scheduled during the off season or shoulder season when the weather may be hotter, colder or rainier. Understanding the climate of your adventure travel destination can help you decide whether you want to pay now or risk bad weather later.

Sport fishing is the activity of catching fish in a competitive setting or for entertainment purposes. If compared to commercial fishing, sport fishing falls in the category of hobbies that put very little pressure on the environment: we are talking about an activity that demands nothing for the joy it gives in return. The sheer leisure pursuit, this is the main trait of sport fishing, as it has nothing to do with profit or survival issues.

The most basic of sport fishing form requires nothing else but lots of hooks, a rod, a line and a reel. Of course, there are other additional devices, known as terminal tackle, that people use so as to alter or complete the way the bait attracts fish. Some common tackle items for commercial and sport fishing, floats, swivels and weights deserve a first mention. Sometimes, instead of baits fishermen rely on different types of lures, thus, sport fishing incorporates handcrafter applications as well as plastic artificial flies and imitations of crawlers.

Though a male occupation first and foremost, sport fishing has left room enough for women too. Some hobbyists are disatisfied with the way some issues are dealt with in the fishing circles and the big paradox refers to the lack of apparent purpose for the sport. What’s the point of fishing if you eventually release the catch anyway? And yet, this is the very purpose of sport fishing. Relaxation and fun define a sport that can be easily defined as a catch-release game.

There are different ways of doing sport fishing. The reasons why people have come up with this diversity were mainly invented to set competition standards and move the practice to a more peaceful environment friendly level. Thus, you should know that some of the sport fishing types include noodling, big-game fishing, kayak fishing and trout tickling. For example, in the case of kayak fishing people depend on stealthy sea kayaks that allow fishermen to reach areas that are unfishable under regular circumstances. In big-game fishing the main action is carried out in boats, too, and the catch is represented by large open-water fishes such as sharks, malin or tuna. Anyway, individual fishing contests are run on land while team competitions depend on boats.

Walking along the streets of Barcelona and taking in the sights is one of the best ways to explore this idyllic city. Alternatively, tourists can also take a boat ride to gain another unique experience of the city.

While tourists can purchase a map and arrange their own walking tours, they run the risk of getting lost and losing time trying to find their way around. The better option, therefore, is to take the services of walking tour companies, which hire qualified tour guides who can not only direct tourists through the city, but can also provide valuable information regarding its history and architecture. A few of the excellent walking tour companies in Barcelona are Viator Tours, Barcelona Tourist Authority, Antoni Gaudi foot Tours and Walking Planet.

No tourist can take in the entire city in just one tour by foot, owing to which walking tour companies have devised different types of tours based on area, attractions of the city and themes. There are, sightseeing walking tours, tours to specific areas of the city and tours designed on specific themes such as food walking tours, wine tasting tours and photo tours by foot. Tourists are even free to consult a walking tour company and design a walking tour to suit their tastes, budget, interests and requirements.

Taking boat tours is one of the most romantic ways of viewing the city’s attractions. Usually, boats depart from Portal de la Pau in summer, and adventurous visitors can purchase a one-way ticket and walk the 4 kilometre distance back instead of returning by boat.

Barcelona has several boat tour companies that offer different tours via types of boats such as speedboats, catamarans, motor boats and others on hire. Tourists can rent any boat they are comfortable with and enjoy a boat ride on their own, which will give them an opportunity to experience the city of Barcelona in a unique manner.

Alternatively, visitors can sign up for a luxury boating cruise featuring dinner, musical shows, parties and entrainment. Many boat tour companies offer boat tour services in Barcelona and tourists should make it a point to find out whether the boating service can really give them what they want before purchasing a ticket for a boating tour. For instance, Les Golondrines arranges long and short boating trips and one of its special features is the availability of catamarans with an under-the-water view.

Mountain climbing can be done under many different conditions, and as such, there are a lot of different forms of mountain climbing shelters. Seeing as different locations can have wildly different terrain and weather conditions, the choices available to mountain climbers vary based on location and the general expected needs of the climbers. These shelters are particularly important on longer climbs, when people spend days on the mountain to climb to the highest peaks.

Huts are extremely common forms of shelters found in many European climbing spots. They can be found at different points along the mountains, and offer the basic necessities, such as a dining area and a place to sleep, as well as provide shelter should a climber need to rest, or unload some of their pack along the way. Huts vary in what they provide; some have staff year-round, some have seasonal staff, and some have no staff at all. Some of the more upscale staffed huts have diverse offerings that climbers can take advantage of, with food and drink made available. Others require the people staying in the huts to bring their own provisions.

Tents are also a very common choice for mountain climbing shelters. A climber simply brings a tent on the climb and secures it appropriately. It is important to buy a tent that is strong enough to hold up to all weather, as many mountain climbers encounter snow, ice, and high winds. As such, using a tent is not always the safest way to go, especially if winds happen to collapse the tent or destabilize it in any way.

Some mountain climbers like to use snow caves as a basic form of shelter. They’re warmer than tents, despite being made of snow, but in order to build a snow cave, a climber needs to have access to basic tools, the most important being a snow shovel. It is not that hard to build a snow cave; they can be built anywhere there is at least four feet of snow, which is a common condition for many mountain climbers to be in. A snow cave is not the same as an igloo, as it is far more simplistic and easier to build. Igloos are extremely uncommon shelters, as they are difficult to assemble.

Many climbers choose to rough it and go the route of a bivouac or a “bivy.” A climber uses a Bivouac sack and a sleeping bag and rests, usually using a crevice or a trench as a means for shelter. Although some purists enjoy doing it this way, many climbers will consider this an option only in case of an emergency.

It is important to remember that mountain climbing is a very dangerous activity. One of the best ways to ensure safety is to be certain the proper shelter will be available, but also to have a back-up plan as well.

Tracking and Monitoring

Animal monitoring is one of the most important elements of wildlife conservation. Whether it is by electronic tracking or by human observation, animal numbers must be monitored so that their populations can be controlled. If the numbers of a particular species grow too large they could threaten other animals, and if they fall too low steps need to be taken to protect them. Following the movement and migration of animals also provides the chance to research their behavior. Of course, for volunteers, the chance to observe animals like lions and elephants in their natural habitat can be an unforgettable experience!

Habitat and Reserve Maintenance

There are all kinds of efforts that must be made to maintain the habitats in a wildlife reserve. Rock erosion needs be monitored and countered, and any alien plants and animals which could be a threat to the reserve must be found and removed from the reserve. Many reserves rely on perimeter fences to prevent animals from moving out of the reserve (and to prevent unwanted visitors!), and these need to be checked on and repaired if they are damaged. This kind of work may not be the most exciting side of wildlife conservation, but it is just as essential as any other element.

Rehab and Veterinary Care

Out in the wild, sick and injured animals soon become victims of predators, or simple starvation. However, on a wildlife reserve dealing with endangered species or low populations, the loss of even a single animal can be a terrible setback. Wounded, sick, and poisoned animals can be captured and brought back to a veterinary centre to be treated, rehabilitated, and then reintroduced back into the wild, and this is often an important part of any wildlife conservation program.

Reserve Patrol

Wildlife reserves are fragile areas that need to be protected from humans. Some times, people cause damage unintentionally – tourists feeding animals without knowing that it is forbidden, or attempting to take out rare plants as souvenirs. Some times, of course, it is a deliberate effort, poachers being the most well known human threat that conservationists have to battle against. Most wildlife reserves are diligently patrolled to ensure that tourists and the local population are treating the environment with the respect and care that it deserves.

A folding style blade can be safely kept in a pocket, although you may want to make sure it is in a pocket that can be closed, as it can be frustrating to take your game and then discover that your knife fell out of your pocket somewhere along the way and you are unable to field dress your kill.

Custom hunting knives are a great heirloom piece if you are looking for something that you can use now, and then pass down to generations of other hunters. Although these knives are considerably more expensive than a regular hunting knife, they are quality pieces, artistically crafted and made to endure through the ages. Such a knife would be a terrific gift to give to a serious hunter on a special occasion. Custom knives range in price from under $200 to well over $2,000.

When it comes to a hunting knife, few, if any, brands have earned the reputation for quality and craftsmanship that Buck hunting knives have. Buck knives have stood the test of time, as the company has been producing them for over 100 years. These knives are so well crafted that the company stands behind them 100% and offers a forever warranty upon the purchase of their knives. Quality and customer satisfaction are important at the Buck knife company and a hunter can be certain that they are getting hunting knives that will get the job done when they purchase one.

White water rafting is a thrill-seekers sport that almost anyone can do, and it’s ideal for groups too. Rushing down a rocky river and with adrenalin rushing through your veins

Booking a rafting trip with a professional, experienced, white water rafting company guarantees high standards of equipment and safety. They use trustworthy, stiff inflatable boats (known as rafts) and supply crash helmets and life jackets for you and your group. Expert training is provided, and your instructor demonstrates all the safety procedures before your paddles get wet, and remains in the raft with you all the way down.

The level of difficulty changes according to the river, and there’s a big difference between rafting on a meandering, waterway, and tackling a rough, pounding torrent. There are established gradings for white water rafting rivers around the world, ranging from Grade 1 which is easy, to Grade 5 which is extremely difficult. (There’s actually another grade 6 above these which is reckoned to be “unrunnable”.)

The level of water in a river will also impact the level of difficulty, so it’s wise to check beforehand with the tour guides about the river conditions. When river levels are low, after a long dry spell for example, a river will run faster, and more boulders will be exposed, affecting navigation and speed. When rivers are high, they tend to slow down and have fewer obstacles. Whichever, the whole aim is to enjoy yourself, so ensure that you’ll have a decent challenge, but not so much that it will scare the living daylights out of you!

White water rafting is a fantastic group activity, and this is another reason why it can be incredibly good fun. It’s brilliant if you’re in a group of mates, or a team of work colleagues looking to enjoy and participate in a thrilling day out. With everyone’s paddles going like blazes, guiding the raft away from boulders and currents, working together and splashing water everywhere, you’re certain to have a great experience.

Screaming down a river with your workmates or group can also do wonders for morale, even if there are shy or untalkative ones amongst you. For the same reason, white water rafting is spot on for hen or stag weekends when members of the party come together for the very first time. By the end of the experience, everyone will be buzzing from the days exhilaration, grinning from ear to ear and utterly bushed!
